2015 / 2016 Ski Season Kicks off in South Lake Tahoe

It’s finally here! While we had a fantastic summer with perfect weather through most of it, many of us here in Tahoe are more than ready for winter. And we’ve all got our hopes up for a decent snow year, with the official designation of an “El Nino” this year. And it has certainly started out with a bang! Our first storm of the winter over Halloween weekend brought upwards of a foot of snow to the higher elevations and blanketed the region in white all the way down to lake level. Mt. Rose and Boreal both opened up for the season at the beginning of November. A week later, we saw a second strong storm that brought another foot to the mountains. And a third storm on November 16 provided more snow. With excellent early season coverage Heavenly, Kirkwood, Squaw Valley, Alpine Meadows and Northstar at Tahoe all started running their lifts for the year over the weekend of November 13 and Sierra at Tahoe just announced that they will be opening tomorrow!

We got out on the mountain at Heavenly on Saturday for their opening day and were pleasantly surprised by the great conditions. Coverage on the entire top of the mountain is excellent already! For early season, all access is via the gondola with Tamarack, Comet and Dipper Express lifts running. The beginner area at the top of the gondola (Big Easy chairlift and the Magic Carpet) is also open.

With another strong storm slated to hit early next week, just in time for Thanksgiving weekend, we are off to an excellent start to ski season 2015/2016! Keep it coming Mother Nature!
