Tips for Learning How to Ski or Snowboard

So you’ve decided that you would like to try skiing or snowboarding. We can’t blame you! Both sports are so much fun and there’s nothing better than spending a day on the slopes with family and friends. But, it can be very intimidating and overwhelming when you begin to plan your foray into these snowsports. We’re here to give you some practical advice and to take the mystery out of getting yourself organized and ready for your first day on the mountain.

Reserve your Ski or Snowboard Gear: Visit https://blacktieskis.com and make a reservation for your in-room ski or snowboard rental fitting. Black Tie’s professional rental technician will come and expertly set you up with your equipment in the comfort of your vacation accommodation eliminating the need to wait in line at the resort with the masses in the morning. Most of the time the rental fitting will take place the evening before you plan to ski, which makes getting onto the snow much easier and faster in the morning.

Sign up for Lessons: It will benefit you greatly to take at least one lesson. Your instructor will be able to teach you how the gear works and will get you started on the basics of sliding down the mountain. Sure, you can just head up there and try to figure it out on your own, but I assure you that you will progress more on that first day if you have an expert showing you the correct way to do it.

Organize the Necessary Clothing Items: You will need the following:

  • Waterproof and insulated snow pants
  • Waterproof and insulated parka/ski jacket
  • Waterproof ski gloves/mittens
  • Good “over the calf” wool or synthetic ski socks. DO NOT WEAR COTTON SOCKS! Do not wear ankle socks!
  • Wool or synthetic base layer top and bottom (long-johns). Again, NOT COTTON.
  • Eye Protection: Ideally ski goggles, but sunglasses will suffice if it is not snowing or windy
  • Ski helmet or a beanie/hat

If you live in a colder climate and/or you plan to commit to the sport you may already have some or all of the above items. You will probably want to purchase any of the above items that you don’t already have. If you live in a warmer climate or if you are not ready to commit to this new sport Black Tie Ski Rental Delivery offers pants, parkas and helmets available for rent in addition to ski and snowboard packages. You can also purchase wool ski socks, gloves and goggles, which are brought into each fitting appointment and which will run you $24 and up.

Have a wonderful timing learning how to ski and/or snowboard! It’s never too late to take up a new sport!
